Polyvagal Theory (PVT)
A theory developed by American psychologist, scientist and author Stephen Porges. Polyvagal Theory (PVT) states the autonomic nervous system, a branch of the central nervous system, has great influence over behavior, physiology and psychology.
PVT helps us understand what is happening in our brains and nervous systems when we are feeling things like anxiety, disconnection, procrastination, depression, shut down, rage, panic etc. When we know what’s happening in our bodies we can use the body as the point of intervention to shift our state and inner experience.
Understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of our different experiences is an incredibly powerful tool to create deep, lasting change from the inside out.
Deb Dana, a licensed clincial social worker, author and speaker, is well known for translating Polyvagal Theory into a language and application that is both clear and accessible. She has contributed specific methodology, tools, techniques and practices which helps us as therapists, and just as people, use Polyvagal Theory for healing and growth.
